The Church Loses a Good Bishop

#1

Bishop Walter Schoenherr, the Bishop who confirmed me - and who I had the honor of serving as an altar server whenever he came to my church has passed away. From what I remembered of him, he was a person who valued visible practical examples as teaching tools.

For example, rather than an ornamental crosier - he chose a piece of driftwood. I STILL remember the homily he used for confirmations. He told about what he had to endure - the SLAP - and what it meant. And since it was no longer the practice, he warned that he wouldn’t just dab us with chrism, he would SMEAR it.

Please pray for him, but more importantly, please ask him to pray for you. I have no doubt that he will be made a saint.

Our Father in Heaven
Holy be Your Name
Your Kingdom come
Your Will be done
On earth as it is in Heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread
And forgive us our sins
As we forgive those who sin against us
Do not bring us to the test
But deliver us from evil.
Amen.

Hail Mary, full of grace!
The Lord is with you
Blessed are you among women
And Blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus.

Holy Mary, Mother of God
Pray for us sinners
Now and at the hour of our death.
Amen.

Glory be to the Father,
And to the Son,
And to the Holy Spirit.

As it was in the beginning
Is now and ever shall be
World without end.
Amen.

Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord,
And let perpetual light shine upon him.

May he rest in peace.
Amen.

May the souls of the faithfully departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.
Amen.
