The Librorum Prohibitorum today

I’m curious what the official and and unofficial opinion is of the Librorum Prohibitorum, and why certain books are on there but not others.

I can understand why Machiavelli and Jean-Paul Sartre’s works were banned (for instance) but someone like Alexandre Dumas sorta confuses me.

I ask because I wanna read “The Count of Monte Cristo” but I am slightly concerned as to why the author was placed on the list.
