Torture By Sesame Street At Guantanamo Bay: Al Jazeera Reports

In 2008, reports surfaced that detainees at Guantanamo Bay had been tortured by songs such as Metallica’s “Enter Sandman” and Drowning Pool’s “Bodies.”
Now, a new documentary from Al Jazeera shows that detainees may also have been subjected to musical torture of a softer variety.
According to the report, prisoners at the U.S. detention camp at Guantanamo Bay Naval Base were forced to wear headphones blasting music from Sesame Street on repeat for hours or days on end.
Christopher Cerf, the award-winning composer of Sesame Street, was stunned to learn how his music was being exploited.

“My first reaction was this just can’t possibly be true,” he told Al Jazeera. “…Of course I didn’t really like the idea that I was helping break down prisoners, but it was much worse when I heard later that they were actually using the music in Guantanamo to actually do deep, long-term interrogations and obviously to inflict enough pain on prisoners so they would talk.”

This isn’t the first time that music from Sesame Street has been used to break the will of prisoners. In 2003, the U.S. reportedly used the soundtrack to soften up Iraqi POWs.
Sesame Street, an educational children’s television series, has been on the air since 1969.

Anybody here have kids?
Have you been tortured by PBS or other children’s programming, forced to listen to Sesame Street, Barney, Sponge Bob, &c nauseum?
I went thru the gamut with my younger sibs, my stepkids and my own son. It’s a miracle I didn’t turn into a terrorist.

A commenter at HuffPo said he’d confess to the Lindbergh Kidnappingh if forced to go thru the “It’s a Small World” ride at Disney & I tend to agree.

I do’t think the mods allow polls in the news but would you rather be waterboarded or forced to listen to Big Bird?

After welcoming my fifth child and first son into the world this October I have been reminded just how cool cookie monster is. I refuse to believe that this impulsive monster is in any way a threat to anyone not made of cookie dough.

Being tortured with children’s TV network music for days on end would be the ultimate destruction of a man’s dignity…

Twenty minutes of Barney would break down Batman.

Poor kid! Going to have to deal with four older sisters! And, poor you and the husband having to pay for four weddings comes the day.

And I once had to listen to Barney for several hours at a time, multiple days, when we were doing children’s photo IDs at work.
I still shudder.

PTBD - Post Traumatic Barney Disorder.

Symptons can include violent reactions to the colour purple or similar shades, attempts to violently lunge at anyone singing ‘cutesy’ songs in a 100 yard radius and cold sweats when entering the exhibit halls of the New York and London Natural history museum, often followed by a ‘They finally got him then’ moment of joy in these situations.

I often have to leave the room rather than listen to Dora the Explorer speak.

Sorry, Michael, for making the mistake of addressing you as though you were your missus. The other remarks are valid, though.

I love you,
You love me,
We’re a happy family,
with a great big hug,
and a kiss from me to you,
Won’t you say you love me TOO!

I love you,
You love me,
We’re best friends like friends should be,
With a great big hug,
And a kiss from me to you,
Won’t you say you love me too

Barney say hello to a new friend, my father’s old service rifle type:-

Remember Barney, if you point the thin end at yourself it will hug you and kiss you

More on topic wasn’t there a case in either Iraq or Afghanistan of someone using heavy metal to get a captured position under siege to surrender by constantly playing music at huge volume day and night?

Dora “speaks” at the top of her lungs! I feel your pain on this one.

There used to be a newsgoup called alt.die.barney.die

AGHH!!! Please turn it off and waterboard me!

I remember them.

usenet newsgroups were the wild, wild west. No moderation and no charity!

Oh great here it comes… I’m going to be going around the rest of the day singing…

C is for cookie, which is good enough for me,
C is for cookie, which is good enough for me,
C is for cookie, which is good enough for me,
oh cookie cookie cookie starts with C…

 it begins.

And in that weird sing-song cadence. Thank you for your sympathy.

She sounds like a comic book villain when she uses that voice and very disturbed one at that.
