"Transgendered" is not compatible with Christian belief

That is not true. To be stripped of a gender identity would be a loss of part of the identity of the person.

We will not partake in sexual acts in heaven, but we’ll all be fully male or female, as God intended.

That’s a rare and different topic.

Our God is all powerful. He created man from dust, so he can also restore our bodies from ashes.

There is no need to quibble over bits of matter that were in one human body and have gone on to another.

God could, if HE had to (he won’t), roll a bare soul in a sand dune and form a completely perfected human body.

Atoms and molecules are not tagged to the human bodies they were once in. Even your own cells dissociate from “you” once they flake off your skin.

ICXC NIKA

Which raises an even more interesting issue, that of why there should be such a belief as resurrection of the body in the first place. After all, plenty of other Christian teaching seems to be focused upon belittiling and despising the flesh, even mortifying it in extremes of devotion, whilst focusing upon ‘spiritual’ development. So why is the physical body important enough to preserve - or restore - for eternity? Perhaps because most people can’t think of themselves in any other way than as a bodily being? Could it be that this is just one more merely human doctrine in a wholly man-made religion?

IIRC, Augustine of Hippo speculated that our bodies would be restored to further increase our happiness in Heaven. He also speculated that even lost limbs would be restored. Of course, that also applied to those condemned to Hell so that their torments would be even greater.

Are you referring to quantum entanglement?

Which all suggests of course that the pleasures of heaven (excluding sex, though, apparently) and the torments of hell would be of a physical nature, if physical bodies are required to experience their full extent. How might that work, since heaven and hell are supposed to be part of a ‘supernatural’ reality?

Because, counter to the prevailing Greek philosophy at the time, there can be no human life without a human body.

You can’t see without a body, as eyes are a body part.

You can’t smell without a body (ditto the nose).

Or move (ditto the limbs).

Or even know (ditto the head!!!)

So whatever existence was possible in a bodiless state would not be Heaven!

Biblically, flesh != body. Denying the flesh is done, not to demean the body, but to strengthen the will.

ICXC NIKA

Right. So the whole concept of a nonphysical, supernatural soul is bunk, yes? After all, if it can’t do anything substantial without a body, what’s it for, exactly?

This idea is actually similar to what the Gnostics believed. They were an early heretical sect that believed that salvation came through the special secret knowledge imparted to them by the apostles. They thought that matter was evil. But in the eyes of an orthodox Christian of any tradition (Catholic, Protestant, Orthodox) this is bunk. God created us as beings with both flesh and spirit, and as I have tried to explain to you twice now, humans and all of creation were originally good and very good. It was through the rejection of God through sin that human beings and the natural world we see around us became corrupted and subject to decay. When God restores creation there will be no more sin, corruption, or decay, therefore there will be no cause to despise the flesh. Flesh may be “despised” now because it is weak and leads us into sin- but we Christians have hope that one day God will take away about inclination toward sin and prefect us by His grace.

No. And I disagree with the comments that were made that led to this statement. The fullness of human life is only experienced with soul and flesh joined together. The body without the soul is as dead. The soul without the body is incomplete. I don’t presume to speculate as to the physical properties of the human spirit and what it can or cannot do with a body of flesh- except to say that I believe the soul does exist and survives the death of the body.

Not at all. A small percentage of persons are born with incomplete genitals or both sets of genitals. They are called “intersex” because their gender failed to completely differentiate in utero.

All humans start with the same cells which do not become male or female until there is a hormonal bath during development. Interruptions to this development may result in the fetus failing to completely differentiate sexually.

There are also cases where doctors and parents have chosen to resolve this condition but have missed the mark, so the inner experience of the persons’ gender may be opposite of the genitals that were selected. Most of human sexuality is actually in the brain, rather than the genitals, which is why there are individuals who feel they have been born into the 'wrong body".

There should be a belief in all Truths that have been revealed to humanity by God.

This is simply a misunderstanding of the Christian faith. When Scriptures enjoins is not to be led about by the desires of the flesh, it has a much to do with carnal impulse control as it does actualy “flesh”. The flesh is part of our animal/lower nature, and must be subjugated to reason and spirit.

Mortifying the flesh is about bringing the physical impulses and desires into congruence with God’s intention for our lives. God made us corporeal, so the physical realm is part of our identity. We are taught that baptized Christians are “temples of the Holy Spirit” and therefore we must worship God in and through our flesh. It is not “either Spirit/or Flesh” but both, and bringing the flesh into line under the Spirit.

God created it, and has decided it is important.

No. Jesus incarnated to show us the value of the physical body. He then sanctified the flesh He took upon Himself, and brought it to heaven with Him when He ascended. This is His plan for all human flesh - that we become free of sin, and are able to glorify Him most perfectly in our bodies.
