Types of Christian Art

I’ve been interested recently in Christian Art. What are the main types of Christian art (Byzantine, Dark Ages, etc.) and where could I find information about them?

Perhaps all the major western art movements from the early centuries A.D. until we get to the end of the 1800’s when they start talking about “art for art’s sake”. I’m just an indentured bond-slave though.

art for art’s sake, a slogan translated from the French l’art pour l’art, which was coined in the early 19th century by the French philosopher Victor Cousin. The phrase expresses the belief held by many writers and artists, especially those associated with Aestheticism, that art needs no justification, that it need serve no political, didactic, or other end.
