U.S. military charter plane forced to land in Iran

A U.S. military charter aircraft flying from Afghanistan has been forced down in Iran by Iranian fighter jets, according to officials familiar with the incident.

The plane, which departed Bagram air base on Friday, was chartered by the Pentagon from Fly Dubai, an airliner based in the United Arab Emirates, and was carrying approximately 100 Americans and possibly a pair of Canadians. After being intercepted by the fighter jets, the plane was escorted to the southern Iranian city of Bandar Abbas.

A spokeswoman for the UAE Embassy in Washington said she was aware of the incident but did not have additional information. washingtonpost.com/world/national-security/us-military-charter-plane-forced-to-land-in-iran/2014/09/05/c1dbcd66-3531-11e4-9e92-0899b306bbea_story.html?wpisrc=al_national

The headline has been corrected. The flight was not chartered by the US military. It was chartered by “U.S.-led coalition forces.”

The flight plan of the jet was questioned by Iranian air controllers. When the pilots responded they didn’t have enough fuel to return to Afghanistan, they were were instructed to land.

I notice.

I copied and pasted the original title.

Moderator, please feel free to correct the title to, “Western military charter plane lands in Iran”

The plane is currently at an airport in southeast Iran and the official said “hopefully” the plane will be able to take off soon.

You would have thought they would have fueled up by now and been on their way. I think “hopeful” is the latest on this and thats not really new…

“This was a bureaucratic issue with the flight plan of the plane,” a senior U.S. official told ABC News. “Everybody is working on the issue and we expect it to be resolved in the very near future."

and the officials requested anonymity?

They haven’t taken off yet? How did they end up in Iranian air space?

Something seems fishy with this story.

A direct route from Bagram airfield to Dubai would be through Iranian air space. The plane was forced to land in Bandar Abbas, which is pretty close to the most direct flight path.

The issue seems to be related to the timing of the flight, which took off several hours later than scheduled. This may have been the cause of the Iranian concern. At any rate, the plane eventually departed Iran and safely arrived in Dubai.

Glad they safely arrived in dubai!

So the flight path was supposed to enter iranian airspace or not?

Me too, Iran chose to be civil! Little further south on the flight plans is recommended.

I just read that the ayatollah actually has agreed to have iran cooperate with the united states against ISIS. Maybe the plane was on a secret mission.

Is there any reason to think the US is interested in cooperating with Iran? The US State Department pushed back against the idea, when it was first floated after the fall of Mosul.

I think it shows Iran wants to make sure ISIS is stopped and as much as they hate the U.S. they must reslize they might need our help.

I doubt that.

ISIS is slaughtering Shiites, Iran’s brand of Islam.

They are the target of ISIS and have been pouring weapons into the Kurds to help drive them back.

Iran, like other parts of Islam, are learning that there is no alliance benefit with ISIS.

They’ll work with us until the ISIS thread is gone, then go back to hating us.

Pragmatic jihadists.

I don’t think you understood my post. What is it you doubt?

Yes Iran is shia and ISIS sunni and that is why they want ISIS stopped.

I do agree with what you say that Iran would return hating us once ISIS was destroyed.
