Underwear

A thread that I started in Moral Theology has–go figure–centered on the moral issues. forums.catholic.com/showthread.php?t=84127
So, let me put the other half here. I am particularly interested in your opinions, ladies.

A husband buying “nice” (also could substitute “sexy” or “special” or ?–you get the point) underwear for his wife.

Do you (Would you) appreciate it if he does this? Or would you so prefer something else? Does it seem more like a gift for you or for him?

I am only engaged, not married.

I know my fiance to guard himself well against lust toward other women and toward me, so I look forward to receiving such gifts.

#3

Well, since I like pretty lingerie it would be a gift for me as well as for him

His purchasing these things for me is also an indication that he still thinks of me as “the most beautiful woman in his life” (read this in the other post) not a bad thing in a marriage of almost 27 years.

One thing I’ve learned in 20 years of marriage is that most “nice” underwear from a man’s viewpoint is pretty uncomfortable from a woman’s. So I leave the underwear choices to the wife. Besides, I wouldn’t want her picking out mine, so why should I pick out hers.

Sometimes comfort is more important than looks.

Wow, I must be old…

If you are wondering if your wife would like it, is it something that she already seems to appreciate herself? If she is not into lingerie, she might not think it is much of a gift.

Personally speaking, I have always liked it, buy it for myself, appreciate it as a gift, etc. Even my parents and sisters know it is a good gift for me. I appreciate it when my husband buys it for me too.

I think it depends entirely on the woman in question. Some women like these gifts because they are “girly” and make them feel pretty - just like jewlery. Some women are too self-conscience or may be more practical minded and would prefer something else.

Assuming the dh knows his wife, he should buy according to what he feels would suit her.

Depends on what size he’s planning on getting!

Yup. That could indeed make a difference. :bigyikes:

If it was my style I would like it. If it was something I normally wouldn’t buy or wear for myself I’d think, “So are you saying that what I normally wear isn’t good enough?” I think underwear is a personal purchase… just my opinion.

I like wearing nice lingerie. Even when I am wearing paint covered blue jeans, wearing something frilly underneath makes me feel feminine. I would love such a gift from my hubby.

I have known some women to get offended by their hubby’s insistence on buying sexy lingerie. They feel that their hubby’s are buying a gift for themselves or that they are viewing them merely as sex object.

Actually there is an easy solution to this problem. Ask your wife how she feels about such a purchase. I don’t know of a woman that would be offended by such a question.

i’d love it but DH would never buy it. i usually go shopping with my sister and surprise him:)

Personally, I would prefer my husband not make such purchases for me, not because I don’t like frilly underwear, but because of the places one must go to get such things and the provocative photos often attached to the garments themselves. I don’t mind picking out a few things from the sale rack at Victoria’s Secret, but I wouldn’t like to think of my husband going into that store! Other women may not mind so much, but my husband has informed me of a particular weakness he has in the area of sexual temptation, and I can guarantee he would be incredibly distracted by all the imagery. Indeed, even the items for sale at Wal-mart and Target, where we usually shop, feature photos of mostly-naked women.

So I’d rather he leave the underwear shopping to me, and just trust that I pick out something suitable.

After 15 years of marriage my hubby knows I’m a cotton underwear girl. Lingere like a negligee or teddy is pretty much a gift for him which took him a few years to figure out. But I’m ok with that, I’m mean if he still thinks my body looks good in that stuff more power to him.

One of the most memorable gifts I’ve recieved from my hubby was bras (for christmas). I had been crabbing about needing new bras but I really didn’t want to spend the money - ok I’m frugal. Hubby went shopping on his own one weekend before Christmas. After finding out how rediculously over priced bras are at Victoria’s Secret he moved on to other department stores and eventually out of the mall to Kohl’s department store. He was in luck they were having a bra sale. He walked around picking out bras, making sure they had no underwire (cause I crab about that too) and feeling them to make sure “they weren’t scratchy”. I’m thinking the sales lady thought he had some weird bra fetish. What he picked were 3 very plain but very comfortable bras. I thought it was the greatest gift he got me because he was thinking completely of me.

If you haven’t been married too long kind of give your guy a break, I’m sure he means well. Guys just think differently then women. Guys want sexy so they think sexy is a good gift (after all they like it). Women want romantic gifts (sometimes when we’re broke I want practical gifts). The thing is a man thinks sexy is romantic. So be easy on him.

a gift for both. I love pretty underware. I’t would make me feel good thinking my husband wanted to see me in them.

Goodness me! This made me laugh. My boyfriend is very practical. He’ll get me anything I want so long as it’s practical.Just no jewelry ! He’s such a dear, well meaning man. The other day he came home with a 50 lb bag of oatmeal :rotfl: because he knows I like oatmeal for breakfast. It was so sweet, I didn’t have the heart to be mad. Personally, some “feminine things” would have been nice! ~ Kathy ~ :rotfl:

I think that is so sweet Kathy! I can just imagine him lugging around a 50 pound bag of oatmeal thinking, “Ooooooooh she is going to LOVE this!”

One year for Christmas my dear husband gave me an ironing board cover. He said he thought I’d think the flowers on it were pretty.

It’s the thought that counts.

My husband and I are still in the early years of our marriage, but I hold out hope that eventually, DH will be able to overcome his (very sweet) self-consciouness about the “being seen in the ladies department” issue, and bring me home something he picked out all by himself!

In the mean time, he always thinks long and hard about the gifts he gives me, and so I know he really wants to please me! And I pick out “our” frilly gifts myself. :stuck_out_tongue:

That is very cute.

This weekend I was in H&M and noticed a guy shy-ly walking around the women’s underwear section looking at some bras and panties. Then I bumped into him in the check out line and you could just totally tell that he was trying to hide the under wear in his hands so that the women in line wouldn’t notice it (yeah right). He was so embarrassed, but it was so cute and very sweet.

Why don’t you just tell him what you want?
