n November, voters in California passed Prop. 8, which amends the state constitution to define marriage as a union between one man and one woman. Now many of the state’s unions have filed a brief before the California Supreme Court to overturn it. The brief, according to a Pacific Justice Institute press release, claims Prop. 8 “would strip one class of citizens of a fundamental right.”
Brad Dacus, founder of the Pacific Justice Institute, notes the unions believe they have the backing to overturn the amendment. “These unions are spending the union dues of countless numbers of union members to oppose this traditional definition [of marriage],” he says.
However, he points out that union members have control of their money, so they can request that their dues go to a charity instead. Dacus believes many have been inspired to do so.
