Was Alcoholics Anonymous started by Catholics?

I am told that Bill Wilson was a Catholic and has saved many lives through his founding of Alcoholics Anonymous in the 1930’s, much of which I’m also told is based upon Catholic teachings (though not stated as such because AA is a non-denominational organization). I’m curious as to what the Catholic Church has to say about Bill Wilson and his life and legacy. I am also curious as to whether or not anyone has ever proposed he be considered for sainthood for his many good deeds?
