Was Thomas Merton orthodox?

I keep hearing of Thomas Merton and his writings, especially since his abbey of Gethsemani is in my state. Are his beliefs and writings in line with the teachings of the Catholic Church? I am under the impression that his theology was influenced by Buddhism or Hinduism, which would seem to make his theology unacceptable to the Church.

Although Thomas Merton was an expert in non-Christian Eastern religions and interested in interreligious dialogue with adherents of those religions, he himself was an orthodox Catholic.
