Wow! 22% is pathetic. :(
Yes and no. It IS pathetic on objective standards that so many people have casually discarded their catholic faith. But humans have been pathetic since the fall, God isn't particularly surprised. And I can't speak for you, but I'm still pathetic in a lot of ways too in spite of trying to conform myself to the will of God all these years.
What catholicism does is create both a spiritual and cultural identity in its people. Unlike the purely spiritual identity featured at many non-denominational communities, the catholic identity seems to be sticky long after its spiritual component is rejected. You can look at this as bad, or see it as an opportunity to win them back. You choose. ;)
