Watching Mass on TV

My brother and I had the EWTN broadcast of Pope Benedict’s Christmas Eve Mass on television. I got a text message and responded and my brother, in a half-joking tone of shock, asked “Are you texting during Mass?”

He was kidding, but then we actually thought about it, and we couldn’t decide whether it was okay. If the Mass in on television, do we have to behave as if we are attending Mass? (The EWTN translator/broadcaster apparently doesn’t think so, since he talked through the entire post-homily silent reflection).

Watching the Mass on TV is not the same as participating in the Mass in person.
