Were Catholics prohibited from reading the Bible in recent times?

A friend, 78, who went to parochial school, states that in her day Catholics were not permitted to read the Bible.

I too went to Catholic school and we had a children’s Bible in third grade. Also Catholic homes had Bibles that the Church sold so why would someone be allowed to purchase one and not think they weren’t allowed to read it?:whacky:

Well I’m pushing 78 and I have never been told that I wasn’t permitted to read the Bible. In fact our parish school had family Bibles for sale. Your friend’s experience was not typical.
