Were Joseph and Mary married?

Although I don’t believe there is dogmatic position on this, the Orthodox Church generally refers to “St. Joseph the Betrothed”, takes the position that the betrothal was undertaken to protect Mary, and that Joseph and Mary were never actually married or intended to marry. I believe our Churches agree in regard to the ever-virginity of Mary, but I would be interested in the Catholic position on whether they married, along with its basis. Is it perhaps related to Matt 1:20?
