WH Press Secretary: ‘We’re Not Just Going To Sit Around And Wait’ For Congress To Pass Immigration Laws

#1

From WUSA-TV:

Frustrated waiting for Congress to act on immigration reform, newly-minted White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest said that President Barack Obama is seeking ways to use his executive authority to directly stem a recent influx of illegal immigrants streaming into the U.S.

Speaking with MSNBC Thursday, Earnest said the Obama administration is “not just going to sit around and wait interminably for Congress.”

“It’s fair to say the White House and the president have been pretty disappointed,” White House press secretary Josh Earnest told MSNBC. “We’re not just going to just sit around and wait interminably for Congress.”

“We’ve been waiting a year already,” continued Earnest. “The president has tasked his Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson with reviewing what options are available to the president, what is at his disposal using his executive authority to try to address some of the problems that have been created by our broken immigration system.”

Or, as reported in The Hill:

Democrats: No bluff, Obama will go it alone on immigration

“We’re at the end of the line,” Sen. Robert Menendez (D-N.J.) said Thursday during a press briefing in the Capitol. "We’re not bluffing by setting a legislative deadline for them to act.

“Their first job is to govern,” Menendez added, “and in the absence of governing, then you see executive actions.”

Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) piled on. Noting that a year has passed since the Senate passed a sweeping immigration reform bill with broad bipartisan support, he urged House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) to bring a similar bill to the floor.

“I don’t know how much more time he thinks he needs, but I hope that Speaker Boehner will speak up today,” Durbin said. "And if he does not, the president will borrow the power that is needed to solve the problems of immigration."

All he has to do is to direct Jeh Johnson to have USCIS grant immediate naturalization (citizenship) to all aliens in the US.

Who cares if it’s unconstitutional? Obama doesn’t like the Constitution anyway – having called it a “charter of negative liberties” (his words…click on the link to hear them for yourself)

Who cares if it’s illegal? After all, are they going to take naturalized citizenship away from them once its been granted – legitimately or not? As one of his Democrat predecessors once reportedly said, “John -]Marshall/-] Roberts has made his decision; now let him enforce it!”

Obama has a pen and a phone…and he’s not afraid to use it. Who will stop him? :doh2::banghead::banghead:

Of course not! Why wait when Obama has a pen and a phone!

Good. This Congress couldn’t pass a humane immigration bill if Jesus came down and asked them to, in Spanish.

In fact, they’d tell him to speak English or leave.

Good for the President.

Constitution? What’s that?

#5

So you’re in favor of an imperial presidency?

#6

Big fan of totalitarianism, huh?

#7

We need to remind this president that he’s in North America, not North Korea. Fortunately this week the Supreme Court assisted in that.

how many times did you vote for Chairman Mao?

What anyone naive enough to support this sort of presidential action, doesn’t realize is that the next president can just unilaterally undo anything this president does. The next president will be well within their right to make actually being Hispanic illegal! Forget coming here illegally. Why do you support that?

You need to be careful waving a gun at people because eventually you’re going to find that same gun pointed right back at you and someone’s going to pull the trigger.

MODERATOR WARNING

No name calling

Charitably discuss the issues, not each other

A few questions.

  1. Please define a “humane immigration bill”.

  2. Please describe the constitutional power granted the president to unilaterally change US immigration law by "executive order.

  3. Will it be ok by you if a future Republican president by executive order, a) allows oil drilling off-shore and on public lands currently restricted, and in ANWR, and b) shuts down all the rules and requirements of ACA?

Obama tells immigrants don’t send your children unaccompanied.

“You mentioned immigration,” said the ABC host George Stephanopoulos. “There’s a humanitarian crisis on the border. Some of your critics have said you need to speak out more directly to the people of Central America and say, don’t come. If you come, you will be deported.”

“We actually — we’ve done that,” Obama said. “The problem is that, under current law, once the kids come across the border, there’s a system in which we’re supposed to process them, take care of them, until we can send them back.”

“Is your message don’t come?”

“Oh,” said Obama, “our message absolutely is don’t send your children unaccompanied on trains or through a bunch of smugglers. That is our direct message to families in Central America. Do not send your children to the borders. If they do make it, they’ll get sent back. More importantly, they may not make it.”

A new detention center has opened in New Mexico with the mission to fast-track deportations for the flood of refugees. It also spells the end of the so-called “catch and release” policy:

A detention center being opened in southeastern New Mexico to deal with the surge in women caught crossing illegally with children into the U.S. from Central America will be focused on deporting the immigrants quickly, officials said Thursday.

During a media tour of the austere barracks at a federal law enforcement training center turned immigration jail, a senior U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement official said the goal is to process the immigrants and have them deported within 10 to 15 days to send a message back to their home countries that there are consequences for illegal immigration. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not allowed to talk publicly citing agency policy.

About a month ago, border patrol agents were suddenly overwhelmed by thousands of Central American immigrant children and women seeking to enter the U.S. Because officials had run out of room at holding facilities, they began releasing immigrant families and requiring them to report back within 15 days.

With this new facility, women found crossing with children will not be released, but held and quickly processed, a step toward returning the department to its policy of not releasing families and deporting those who don’t have permission to enter the U.S. legally.

The President can justify lying, law breaking, and doing anything they want, and this attitude supports that.

By this logic, Nixon didn’t do anything wrong, so why was that an issue then?

Spoken just like the Banana Republic tinhorn dictator that Obama is. The man knows no law which slows his Power-mad “Utopian” vision. How people were unable to see through this terrible man I will never understand. What could one expect from a guy whose pals are all terrorists, anti-Semites, racists and Communists? What will it take before the American people demand that Obama be removed under armed guard? Rob

I am not sure how anyone can claim the President has any respect for the country he leads, when he puts his personal agenda over the principles of the country and its constitution so brazenly. The President’s role HAS never been to further his beliefs come hell or high water. His job is to enforce the laws of the country, and operate within the intent and role of the American presidency. Things like this highlight why so many view him as dictatorial.

He seems to think that his contant bragging of having a phone and a pen is some sort of principled stance of “I’ll do whatever it takes.” It isn’t. it is a statement that says “I don’t care about the laws that have made this country what ity is for two hundred years, because I am above the law, and what are you, the average citizen, going to do to stop me?”

He is a brazen, anti-American narcissist, and for anyone who ever questions why people believe that, simply point them to this topic.

That’s bob and weave distraction so the gullibe will believe that Obama is really on the American people’s side. Unfortunately, his administration put out a wanted ad for escorts for 65,000 children crossing the border on January 29th. Obama planned and approved of EVERYTHING that is happening now. He wants to destroy our country from within. How else can anyone explain this??? Rob :ehh:

My sentiments exactly. I am a bit more hopeful after the SCOTUS ruling against him and according to the news SCOTUS has ruled against Obama’s over reaching twelve times. Maybe as his ratings tank, a few Democrats will desert the sinking ship and block his illegal actions. The irony is that he TOLD everyone what he wanted to do but the fools projected what they wanted him to say rather than actually listening to his words or looking at his associates for some clue about his viewpoint.

The reality is that this administration has proved so untrustworthy that THEY killed any hope of immigration reform. As Paul Ryan said to that supercilious smug jerk IRS Commisioner “We dont believe you.” They lie, override laws, or ignore laws they don’t like or that cause them political trouble. So who would believe they’d actually uphold the laws regarding immigration?

This is already being discussed in another thread

Agreed.

This single topic is the greatest example of the Republicans playing obstructive partisan politics that exist. They will sits on there hands, if the President does nothing, they will blame it on his lack of leadership. If he acts, they will claim his autonomous acts are impeachable offenses. Its a win-win situation for them, a losing situation for the President, and regardless of what impact it has on people, they don’t care one way or another. Service is no longer the mission statement of legislators; instead their only objective is reelection…at any costs.
