What are these titles

#1

I have been watching EWTN and reading literature with Priests, Brother, religious. etc in different orders, and i guess these titles distinguish them to their order, but what do they mean i.e. (O.F.M, O.C.D Fr. Corapi my favorite SOLT) what does these titles mean can someone translate? Thanks

Hi,

O.F.M = Ordo Fratrum Minorum (Order of Friars Minor): Franciscans,

O.C.D = Ordre des Carmes Dechaux (Discalced Carmelite Order) : Carmelites

Fr = Father

S.O.L.T = Society of Our Lady of the Most Holy Trinity.

Yours in the Spirit

Pious

Doesn’t seem to fit.

There are a whole lot more. Generally, the initials refer to an order, such as the above notes, or the Benedictines, or Dominicans, or Trappists, or Grey Friars, etc.

Often, the initials represent the name of the order or community as it is written in the Latin language

For example:

Shannon Collings, CPM

CPM stands for “Congregatio Presbyterorum a Misericordia” which is translated roughly as Fathers of Mercy.

I hope this helps.

Also:
CSsR:
Congregatio Sanctissimi Redemptoris
Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer
commonly known as the Redemptorists

The English doesn’t seem to fit, but that’s why Pious gave it in the French first.

Dear Sean.McKenzie,

Somewhere on this message board someone asked the same question and someone else gave a website that had a very large list of such abbreviations. It should come up if you do a search for it here.

As for OCD, I’m happy to give the Latin: Ordinis Carmelitarum Discalceatorum.
