What does the Church teach about end of life care?

Just watched my father-in-law pass away after a 2 year battle with parkinsons disease in a nursing home. The people in the home were good people who tried to keep him comfy. My question is this, my wife said she would never be happy in a nursing home and I agree with her. If this ever happens to us is there any way to not commit suicide but not be kept almost artifically alive with meds. He basically was almost brain dead for 2 years and did not enjoy life as before. It also ate up most of his wifes savings.
