What does the Church teach about the death penalty?

I posted a question about death penalty and Devon Caffran answered by pointing me to the right places. I actually was hoping to start a general discussion on this topic, but for some reason couldn’t find the place where to post the question.

His reference to Catechism #2267 doesn’t make it clear if it refers to self-defense (when one’s life, or the life of another person is in direct danger), or if it applies to dangerous prisoners, who are safely locked up.

Anyway, please pass on my thanks to Devon Caffran. He doesn’t receive personal messages.
