What ever happened to Limbo?

While it is stated that limbo was never a defined dogma it is also admitted that it was regarded as part of the daily teaching of the Catholic Church.
It is my understanding that that distinction was nor regarded as meaning that a Catholic was free to reject it per se. Is that not so? It was said by official teachers of religion, clerical and lay, more than once that “rejection of iimbo was to deny the Catholic faith.”
