What is the authority of Catholic apologists?

Does the Catholic Church officially recognize the defense of the faith from apologists or are they freelance people who do not speak for the Church?

The Vatican does not deputize laypeople to speak on its behalf as apologists for the faith. Catholic laypeople answer questions about the Catholic faith on the basis of being educated Catholics. Just as a person might turn to a lay catechist for answers to questions of faith and morals, so that person can ask those questions of a lay Catholic apologist.
