What is the Catholic view of centering prayer?

Please explain the Catholic view of centering prayer. In particular, what are we to think of Basil Pennington and Thomas Keating, monks from the Monastery of thse Holy Spirit in Conyers, Georgia, who studied centering prayer, wrote books on it, and promoted it? If it has its roots in Eastern religions, should we be using this form of prayer? Completely emptying the mind for 20 minute periods twice a day is the common practice of centering prayer. Thank you.
