What is the greater evil: Pornography or the people get sexually aroused by it?

I personally believe that society needs a safe outlet for all the (abnormally?) excessive sexual urges of its citizens. If people quit watching it, it would go away all on its own.

Pornography is the greater evil by far. It is intrinsically evil. It exploits one’s natural sexual desire and twists it. It dehumanizes those who are portrayed in it. People on the other hand can choose not to act on it. Not every urge we have needs to be gratified, and there is already a safe and natural “outlet”: marriage.

I agree with this.

I wish I had the data to show how pornography promotes or decreases sexual crimes and sexual harassment! I believe it reduces them! Even a few saints recognized the need to deal with the excessive sexual sewage within our society.

Pornography is intrinsically evil and it cannot morally be used to deal with the “excessive sexual sewage.” Decreases in sexual crimes is good, but the ends do not justify the means. This means that we cannot try to obtain something good by doing something evil. If pornography did decrease sexual crimes, that wouldn’t change the fact that pornography is intrinsically evil because it objectifies human persons and profanes human sexuality and marriage.

As a devout Catholic, I agree with what you’re saying, but I still maintain that it leads to some important, positive results. Porn should NOT be condoned by the religious, it’s true, but I still believe that it serves a serious purpose within our society.

It doesnt I think. It starts with porn, then goes hardcore and then happens a crime because videos werent suffucient.

I think you must control your urges. Its not an excuse. The only natural “release in urges” can be done within the marriage(but in a correct way) or by nocturnal emission(for men). Its like urge to destroy something. Its very common that people are so frustrated or angry so they could destroy something. But most of the time they dont because of self control. Remember: you cant be strong person if urges control you

By that logic, murder serves a serious purpose in society. It culls the population, provides multiple people with jobs, and is an excellent way to settle disputes outside of expensive and time consuming courts.

I think that the main purpose it serves is bad enough that it should be eliminated, regardless of its effects. Its intended purpose is the opposite of helpful. It is destructive. It is profane. It is an abomination. It serves just as much a purpose as Satan himself does.

I agree that the religious shouldn’t condone it, but I also believe the religious should fight against it.

What is worse, murder or murderers?

I wish everybody in our society would think like you and the Church do about porn! Unfortunately, there are a great multitude in our society who do not.

Yes, I believe that the Church needs to condemn it because it is an evil, and society needs to hear from us on porn to keep the morally goods going, but again, society is so complex that it needs an outlet for excessive sexual sewage at this time in human history.

My post was rather inaccurate, just few common facts.
No excuses, porn is evil and should be banned. First, you watch it for “arousal”, then you search for better materials; in this state you have probably created your imaginated image of sexual act, women beauty etc.
Those images stay for long time in your mind. Believe or not, its truth.

Again, I most fully agree that pornography is evil, unfortunately, there does exist a multitude of people who I truly feel needs an outlet. Ideally, porn should not exist.

I should also stress that many good people are addicted to it. Simply outlawing pornography is not the correct answer, but the answer must come from us religious to teach the truth and help those who are addicted. Fighting evil is needed, but MUCH more important is to shine the light necessary for people to decide for themselves not to view porn and see that it’s a destructive evil.

I agree with Pope Francis and The Imitation of Christ that simply avoiding sin does little to uproot the evil within us that causes us to want to sin. Each individual needs to fight the fight without repressing sinful desires. With the help of God, those addicted to porn can reform and become far more righteous in having fought and winning the battle. Again, simply avoiding sin is not such a good thing.

1 Thes 6:12?

Alright then, I’ll bite. What, precisely, would you suggest as an outlet?

And no one here is saying ban it and that it’ll suddenly disappear. But leaving it just because people will be left hanging is not acceptable either.

Isn’t porn just a vehicle for masturbation? I mean if someone didn’t have access to it wouldn’t they still just masturbate sans imagery to deal with their sexual urges?

For me in the past, if I didnt watch anything, I didnt do any action.

Both are wrong. Those who make, produce, sell the pornographic “product” not only harm their souls because of doing so but also harm the souls of those who look at it.

But when a person views it FULLY KNOWING what they are doing for their lustful pleasure then they also have hurt their soul.

Both are sins and both need to end. Neither is better than the other.

Interesting. I don’t remember being dependent on imagery. Maybe because when I started there wasn’t a computer in our household. Hm.
