I've heard some anticatholics comment on the obelisk in vatican city saying that it is a fallic symbol rooted in paganism. They say that this is a remenent of pagan rome. I know that this is completly false, but I am curious as to its purpose.
What a lot of people fail to notice is that the obelisk is not inscribed, their has been a Cross mounted at the top, and at the base there is the Latin inscription:
Sixtvs V Pont Max
Impio Cvltv Dicatvm
Ad Apostolorum Limina
Anno MDLXXXVI Pont II
Ecce crvx Domine
Fvgite Partres adversae
Vicit leo Detribv ivda
Christtvs ab omnimalo
Which roughly translates:
Pope Sixtus V (Supreme Pontiff)
Obelisk of Vatican
richly adorned by the Gentiles
To the threshold of the Apostles
The labor of thing laboriously carried away
1586, 2nd year of his pontificate.
Behold the Cross of the Lord!
go into exile ye hostile powers!
The Lion of the tribe of Judah hath prevailed!
Christ is King,
Christ is Emperor!
May Christ protect His
people from all evil!"
It shows that Christ conquers all!
Maius pax Christi semper esse tecum
