What should we believe about Earth's history?

As a good Catholic, what should I believe about the history of Earth? Was everything created only 6000 years ago? I studied engineering and work in the IT world and so I deal with a lot of facts. I have a strong faith and just would like some guidance in this area even though an answer is not going to change my beliefs.
Thank you.
