What specifically were the Catholic crusades?

[quote=elvisman]WRONG, my friend.
Osama and his legions do NOT reject Islam. They fight their Jihad (holy war) in the NAME of Islam and encourage ALL Muslims to do the same.
Hitler NEVER waged war in the name of Christianity. He didn’t butcher in the name of Jesus. Hitler despised religion.
You mention in an earlier posting:
"The fact is, many people who directly participated in the Holocaust considered themselves to be Christian – Lutherans, Orthodox and so on."
Let me ask you this: How many of them were Catholic, mentally retarded, crippled, homosexual?? Jews weren’t the only ones butchered in the holocaust.
Whatever point you are attempting to make in regards to Muslim/Judeo relations, you are making the WRONG point when you lump Christianity, namely Catholicism, in with Adolf Hitler.

Wrong, my friend. Osama and company are NOT practicing orthodox Islam. They are terrorists first, and use Islam as a cover – just as the Crusaders who massacred the Jews and Muslims of Jerusalem in 1099 used Christianity as cover for their deeds.

Adolph Hitler led a nation that had been Christian for a thousand years. Go there today and you will see Christian (and Catholic) churches everywhere – churches that date back hundreds of years.

You want to pretend that somehow ALL Muslims are bad, and at the same time avoid the sad truth that Christians have committed sins.

From my recent class on the History of the Catholic Church -

The Crusades:

Western Christendom attempted to recapture the Holy Lands from the infidels (Muslims) to guarantee the safety of the Christian pilgrimages.

It was a major western spiritual impetus to go on a pilgrimage. A pilgrimage was considered an act of penance. Popular places of pilgrimage were Santiago, Tours, Rome, Holy Land, and any place where a Saint was buried. Pilgrimages were important from the time of Constatine (c. ~311 A.D.).

*** **First Crusade in 1095, called by Pope Urban II, Jerusalem captured in 1099.

*** **Second Crusade in 1146 preached by Bernard of Clairvaux; was a disaster from military perspective, Jerusalem recaptured by the infidels.

*** **Third Crusade in 1189-1192, was militarily inconclusive.

*** **Fourth Crusade in 1204 called by Pope Innocent III never reached Palestine and stopped with the sack of Constantinople. Venetians control Constantinople until 1294.

*** **Childrens Crusade of 1212, pre-teenage kids went to Holy Land and were slaughtered or taken as slaves by the bloodthirsty infidels (Muslims).

*** **Fifth Crusade of 1228-1229 was led by Emperor Frederick II, Frederick Barbarossa, and it briefly re-captured Jerusalem.

*** **The Sixth and last Crusade of 1248-1254 was led by King Louis IX of France (who was later made a Saint), was taken captive and ransomed.

Although not a Crusade, but a very, very important event: The final expulsion of infidels (Muslims) from Spain in 1492!

WWWWHHHHAAAATTTT???
Once again, you are confused.

One of your earlier statements implied that Christians caused and perpetrated the Holocaust during WWII. I was merely pointing out to you that you are off-base if you would consider Hitler and his cronies “Christians”.
At the same time, you conclude that Osama Bin Laden is NOT a Muslim because he violates some basic tenets of Islam.
In YOUR view, Hitler is perpetually a Christian – even though he violated nearly every major tenet of Christianity - yet Osama is no longer a Muslim because he’s a murderous, hateful monster. What’s the difference???

THAT, my friend, is convoluted logic.

You’re the one who’s confused.

Hitler and his cronies were certainly raised as Christians, in a nation that had been Christian for a thousand years.

Hitler personally killed no one – the actual killers were low-level soldiers and guards. And most of them were Christians. Poles and Lithuanians (who were mostly Catholics) DID cooperate with the killers. Ukanians (who were mostly Orthodox Christians) made up a large segment of the concentration camp guards

You haven’t noticed?

I’ve been reflecting YOUR position back at you. http://forums.catholic.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

If Islam must take responsibility for the likes of Bin Laden, then Christianity must take responsibility for anti-Semitism, ghettos, pogroms, and ultimately the Holocaust.
