What was the very first thing God created?

I’m very likely wrong here, but I don’t think you could have time prior to space and matter. Isn’t time simply and abstraction of change/motion? It has no existence separate from matter (including space).

So I think the creation of the heavens and earth must have preceded time (by literally a single instant). Vain speculation - one ‘day’ we’ll know, I hope.

Some speculation is fun!

One could say it is possible to know time came first because when space or matter were created (whichever was created first) there was actually a change (something began to exist). So either time began at the same instant one of the other two appeared or it appeared before both.

Edit - another way to think is that time, space and matter were created at the same time
