Whatever happened to plenary indulgences?

As a child growing up I remember taking pains to collect indulgences -saying the rosary, 20 hail marys, etc. I may have missed something but I don’t see indulgences mentioned today. If it’s been “discontinued” do we still get “credits?”

An indulgence is the remission (partial or plenary) of the temporal punishment due to sin whose guilt has already been forgiven. The Church’s power to grant indulgences extends from her power, granted by Christ (Mt 18:18), to bind and to loose. The Church continues to grant indulgences to today. For more information see Primer on Indulgences.

For instruction on gaining indulgences and a list of the works and prayers to which indulgences are attached see The Handbook of Indulgences.
