When is Passover?

Peace be with you all,

I was wondering when was Passover and why doesn’t the Catholic Church celebrate the Resurrection of the Lord three days after that date?

Peace, Love and Blessings.

Christians celebrate Easter after the first full moon on or after the vernal equinox rather than basing it on Passover because Pope Victor (ca. 190 A.D.) decreed in council “that the mystery of the Resurrection of the Lord should be celebrated on no other day but the Sunday . . . .”

His reasoning was that Christians should not date the primary Messianic feast of the faith on a calendar used by the people who had rejected Jesus.

If one follows the Jewish lunar calendar, the night that the Passover meal is eaten can fall on any night of the week, and not just on a Saturday. But it is a historical fact that Sadducees and the Herodians that controlled the Temple in the time of Jesus did NOT follow the Jewish lunar calendar. These corrupt men rigged it so that the fifteenth of Nisan always fell on an ordinary weekday Sabbath.Because of this, the first Christians were divided in their practice of when they observed Easter. Some Christian calculated the date of the fifteenth of Nisan using the Jewish lunar calendar, and then commemorated Easter on the following day. For these Christians, Easter could fall on any day of the week. Other Christians felt it was more important to always celebrate Easter on the first day of the week (Sunday), since Jesus resurrected on the first day of the week, and that was seen as being significant.

Eventually, the Church decided in an Ecumenical Council to fix a discipline binding on the whole church, and that is why the Catholic Church celebrates Easter on the first Sunday following the Paschal Full Moon. From 31 A.D. to 325 A.D. Easter Day was celebrated either:
(a) on or just after the first day of the Jewish Passover (no matter on which day of the week that Easter Day occurred), or
(b) on a Sunday close to or on the first Passover Day.
Both of these methods existed continuously throughout this period.
