Who is the patron saint for women athletes?

My daughter will be making her Confirmation this year and has been searching through women saints for one associated with athletics, but is having little success. I have two questions. 1. Is there a woman patron saint of athletes? 2. How does a saint become associated with certain careers or activities? Could a woman saint eventually become associated with athletics via some petition?
Thankyou, Daniel

Dear j,

The patron saint for all athletes is St. Sebastian. There doesn’t seem to be one for just women. Saints who have been associated with a particlular subject are the ones chosen to be patrons of that subject. St. Isadore was a farmer. So he became the patron of farmers. Perhaps your daughter could become the patron of women athletes some day. The position is open. Now all she has to do is become a saint!
