Just wanted to share this site, but be forewarned it is a Catholic Site.

A good resource.

There’s a great book that takes this idea much, much further. It’s called something like Charts of the Western Church and shows like a family tree of hundreds of sects of Christianity.

Good stuff.

Interesting that they make no mention of the Orthodox church.

John

Click on the Catholic link and you will see the Eastern Rite Churches (the Eastern Catholics), members of the Orthodox Church in full communion with the Holy Catholic Church.

Come on Orthodoxes, don’t isolate and alienate yourselves to the true authoritative and Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church. Her doors are open for you, in all humility and respect to your traditions. :slight_smile:

That was a great and resourceful site, by the way! :thumbsup:

Fancy omitting the oldest Church in Christendom!!

Obviously to mark us as commencing in 1054 AD would have made them the laughing stock of Church historians.

But to mark us as commencing in Jerusalem in 33 AD would undercut the claims of the Church of Rome.

Pray to the Lord, that we who remain in the vale of trials may walk the same path which was traced for us by the great Apostle of the Gentiles for the life of Christ’s Church and Her faithful children, when he wrote in his Epistle to the Corinthians so tersely and so powerfully:

“By honour and dishonour,
by evil report and good report:
seen as imposters, and yet true;
as unknown, and yet well known;
as dying, and, behold, we live:
as chastened, and not killed;
as sorrowful, yet ever rejoicing;
as poor, yet making many rich;
as having nothing, and yet possessing everything.”
~ 2 Cor. 6:8–10

Oh please :rolleyes: If you are in full communion with the Catholic church you are by definition Catholic, not Orthodox. If you accept the innovative doctrines of supreme papal jurisdiction etc. you have ceased to be Orthodox, so those Eastern rite churches mentioned are NOT members of the Orthodox church.
You’re new here so you are probably unaware, but even most Eastern rite Catholics are sensitive enough not to use the expression “Orthodox in communion with the Pope” as they understand how offensive and misleading it is. Please keep it in mind in future.

John.

In all humility, I offer my sincere apology on that
misleading comment I did. Yes you are right.
The Eastern Catholics, the Eastern Rite of the Catholic
Church, is distinct from both the Orthodox Church
and those who call themselves the Independent
Churches of the East.

I might be new around here, but I am yet to know
if my Eastern Rite Catholic brethrens, though sensitive
as you claim them to be, are as sarcastic (in all of
their humble sensitivities) as you are in pointing an error.

I am new here, but it’s great to be home where I should
be. Be assured, I will keep that correction in my
mind in the future.

How about the Coptic Church? It was started by St. Mark and is one of the oldest Churches as well.

You know, in looling over the site, it does not appear to be fully finished yet. Then again, it is not necessary to have every single Denomination or Rite in order to make their point.

No offense taken. Their are Baptists denominations that trace their origion back to John the Baptist. They can’t prove than anymore than the Roman Catholic Church can prove it’s origin but if those Baptist are correct then they are the first church aren’t they.
No, I’m not Baptist, however as a Baptized Christian I think we all need to stop we these efforts of trying to prove that “my church is the only church” nah, nah, nah, nah, and get back to the business of evangelizing to the non-christian world lest we become the second largest body of believers surpassed by Islan who believe we are all infidels.
Don’t you think?

The words of someone who knows their “denomination” is not the Church established by Christ, in any sense of the word. Believe me, I understand from personal experience how scary it is once that realization sets in.

BTW, the notion that Baptists trace their roots back to anything earlier than the 1500’s is assinine. Any intelligent scholar, even a Baptist one, will just laugh at it. The “trail of blood” is a ridiculous fairy tale. Believe me, as a former Baptist, I researched the history – in hopes of finding some semblance of a reasonable story that would make something like that possibly true. It’s just not.

Christ established a single Church. He said that the gates of hell would not prevail against it. Christ did not lie.

i believe the reason that the orthodox church is not mentioned is because the roman catholic church considers them catholic. the roman church holds that the line of apostolic succession was never broken in the eastern church, so in the “who started your church” they can trace their line straight back to Jesus just like roman catholics.

This sounds like the best, and simplest explanation, as this site is about who started your Church. The orthodox aren’t listed as they were part of the Catholic Church and started by Jesus but now are separated. We should consider them Catholic as they are pretty much so, just separated from communion with the Church.

All the others listed have a distinct starting time with a person who decides that they will start their own Church.

The Baptist “trail of blood” is illogical and not supported by history, or any credible historians. This would mean that sola-scriptura was created by the Baptists, somehow propagated without a Bible for a few hundred years and then accepted by the supposed Baptists from the very people persecuting them.
This is an innovation of JM Carroll, which is refuted by protestants, secular sources, in addition to Catholic sources.

I can certainly provide more links if needed. The Catholic Church is recognized by most Protestants as having apostolic succession (they just don’t believe in it or have their own reason for their faith), by secular historians and fully supported by Church history.

This list does raise valid points and shouldn’t be offensive as it is the truth and not a negative message. It does nothing to insult other protestant Churches, I know many people who are proud of the Pastor who started their Church.

Well, I think that a little sarcasm was definitely in order, Lumen. Not against you of course, but against the ignorant authors of that article who completely ignored the existence of a body of Christians who number over 300 million! :eek:

Here is a time line of Church history, from the Orthodox viewpoint. You can see that at least the Orthodox have the integrity to acknowledge the existence of the Roman Catholic Church. :thumbsup:

odox.net/A%20Timeline%20of%20Church%20History.pdf

.

Fr. Ambrose, that time line is a severly slanted representation of Historical Truth! IMHO of course. The Latin Rite and Eastern Rite Churchs are both founded by Christ, the Latin (Roman) Rite Church did not “break” from mainstream “Christianity” but the once united Faith was now split into two “parrallel paths” if we are to use your supplied time-line analysis. As Latin Rite Catholics we believe that the Chair of Peter holds a seat chosen by Christ, in which When Christ gave Peter the keys He was echoing the OT, Isiah 22.

Pray for me Father,

Joao

Especially since most of the modern denoms are nothing more than splinters off of splinters…
