Who was Peter's mother-in-law?

Matt 8:14 (for one) tells of Jesus healing Peter’s mother-in-law. Does this mean that Peter had a wife? If so, you’d expect her to wait on Jesus instead of leaving her mother to do the work? Could the term mean the woman who was in law Peter’s mother, such as a step mother? Where does it leave the Church’s prohibition on married priests if the first pope was married?
