Why do Catholics depict Jesus on the cross?

A friend who is a non practicing Catholic asked me why we Catholics keep Jesus on our crucifixes given that we believe in His resurrection and ascent to heaven on the third day following His crucifixion. What is the appropriate response?
Also, is this a belief of some of the Protestant churches?
Many Thanks!

Hi Sammer,

Jesus did not redeem us on Easter Sunday; He redeemed us on Good Friday by His suffering and death on the cross. We keep the image of his suffering body on the cross so that we will never forget how much He loves us.

Even though many non Catholic Christians prefer the Cross without Christ depicted on it, we believe that it is all too easy to forget what He endured and we must never forget! Never !
