Why do some older Catholics spit on the ground when u say bad things?

I usually pray a “Pater Noster” and do the sign of the cross when I see an ambulance with lights and siren but it’s not exactly been something passed down; just something I started doing one day.

My German great-grandmother always said “Oy” as well and it’s something I find myself doing periodically. She was Catholic though and had no Jewish influence growing up.

I don’t think spitting on the floor has anything to do with Catholicism at all. A lot of older Catholics I have known, like my grandfather who was born in the 19th Century, really appreciated a clean floor.

Brute, meaning an animal, would be a synonym for “beast.” Since the Devil is also called "the Beast, " it might be about that.
