Why do we eat fish on Fridays during Lent?

An evangelical friend I have suggested that the reason we eat fish during Lent on Fridays came from a Pope whose family member was in the fish industry. Completely comical, however I couldn’t quite give a good response back and was looking for some assistance. Many thanks.
