Well, I'm in a bit of serious pain right now with an infected foot. Pious platitudes are great - when one is healthy.
My experience of this pain led me at first to believe God was punishing me - which is a possibility. But God could also be testing me. Even when the pain is such that I find it difficult, even impossible, to pray as I'm accustomed to - prayer can be made to God and one can rest, in tears and groans, on God's bosom.
The other night I awoke and, in the darkness, could feel a very warm light surrounding me. I thought, "I love you too, Lord!"
This experience has also taught me that my spiritual life up until now has been too weak to ground me in the power of God to withstand situations of pain that can really bring one to one's knees, shaking and quaking.
Pain can be transcended and thus conquered by being closer to God and the Most Holy Virgin Mary.
