Why does the Pope live in such wealth?

My friend recently commented that it is hypocritical and un-Christlike for the pope to live in such splendor and wealth. She says that it is completely against the way Jesus lived, and also that the Pope should sell off a lot of the wealth in the Vatican to distribute the proceeds to the poor. I disagree, but couldn’t really explain why. I looked for answers to this question on the forum, but couldn’t really find anything that was that helpful. Can anyone help me with this? Thank you in advance!
