Why is My Priest's Title Reverend, Not Father?

Why is my priest title, Reverend and not Father? I noticed his title in our church bulletin, "Reverend Carl . . . I always addressed him as Father.

Reverend (or The Reverend) is basically a civil/courtesy honorific in the English language. It is used pretty much only when addressing an envelope or an official listing of names. However when addressing a priest we use the Catholic expression of respect by saying “Father.”
