Why was Jesus baptized?

I thought that baptism was only for those who have sinned. So, why was Jesus baptized if He had no sin on His soul?

Thanks in advance, God Bless!

John’s baptism was a baptism of repentance, for those who were turning away from their sins. Jesus was baptized by John in order to identify Himself (who had no need to repent from sin) with us (who do). John recognized that Jesus had no need of a baptism of repentance, but Jesus said for him to do it anyway, “in order to fulfill all righteousness.”

By entering the water, Christ did 2 things for us: He showed us the example to follow, and He made the water Holy so that by being Baptized in the water, we receive the Grace that God intended us to receive via Baptism.

ETA: There are dozens of paragraph on Baptism in the Catechism. Particularly of interest here are 438, 535-540, 1223-1225…just to name a few.

This is taken from Vespers in the Eastern Rite for the Baptism of Jesus…

from Theophany…

At the voice of one crying in the wilderness, ‘Prepare ye the way of the Lord’,
You have come, Lord, taking the form of a servant,
and You who know not sin ask for baptism.
The waters saw You and were afraid;
the Forerunner was seized with trembling and cried aloud saying:
‘How shall the lamp illuminate the Light?
How shall the servant set his hand upon the Master?
O Savior who take away the sin of the world,
sanctify both me and the waters.’

At the Baptism of the Lord, it was the first time that the Trinity was manifest to the world. A tremendously awesome moment. We now baptize in the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. John was not baptizing with this form.

In Pope Benedict’s Jesus of Nazareth: The Baptism in the Jordan to the Transfiguration, he also adds that Jesus performs the baptism of repentance to show how profoundly he came incarnate in order to show his solidarity with sinners––so much so, that he accepts going through the rite that sinners go through for their sin.

of course He did not needed baptism, neither Virgin Mary, but He did it because he wanted to show us obedience.
