Works of Mercy necessary for Salvation?

I read in the US Catechism of Adults that if we don’t do the Works of Mercy we can’t be saved. I know in the Bible Jesus says that if we don’t visit the imprisoned et cetera we will be rejected. I always thought this verse was refering to good works in general. Or am I interpreting the Catechism wrong? Thanks!

I always thought of it as whether it is I going to do the work of mercy or I am supporting someone else who does it, it is still fulfilled. I can’t always volunteer, so I may give money. Or I may not always be able to give money, so I volunteer. If this is wrong, let me know.
