World Council of Terrorists

#1

The World Council of Churches is like Christianity’s version of the UN. It is an international ecumenical organization based in Geneva, Switzerland. It has a membership of over 340 churches and denominations which claims about 550 millions Christian members throughout the world in more than 120 countries.

In my eyes, the WCC has just about as much credibility as the UN, i.e. ZERO. It has a long record of supporting terrorists. I refer you to a portion of the Wikipedia article on the WCC:

Available at,

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Council_of_Churches

Programme to Combat Racism during the 1970s

There was controversy over the WCC’s Programme to Combat Racism (PCR), the PCR during the 1970s. It funded a number of humanitarian programs of liberation movements while those groups were involved in violent struggle, examples include:

* In 1970, Reader's Digest suggested that the PCR was contributing to fourteen groups involved in revolutionary guerrilla activities, some of which were Communist in ideology and receiving arms from the Soviet Union (Reader's Digest, October 1971).

* In 1977 "The Fraudulent Gospel" by Bernard Smith ISBN 0-89601-007-4 was published in the USA and Britain and carried a graphic photo on the front cover of 27 Black Rhodesians it said were "massacred by WCC-financed terrorists in Eastern Rhodesia in December 1976".

* Donating $85,000 to the Patriotic Front of Zimbabwe (ZANU) in 1978, months after the group shot down an airliner, killing 38 of the 56 passengers on board. Members are reported to have killed 10 survivors (this was denied by the Front) [16]

This caused much controversy in the past among member churches. In a Time Magazine article entitled "Going Beyond Charity: Should Christian cash be given to terrorists?” (October 2, 1978). Further examination of WCC’s political programme appeared in Amsterdam to Nairobi - The World Council of Churches and the Third World by Ernest W. Lefever (1979, Georgetown University, ISBN 0-89633-025-7 . Further criticism has also been cited by the Christian right, for example in March 1983 issue of Jerry Falwell related Fundamentalist Journal:

There has been an 'enormous disturbance' in British churches, says one Executive Committee member. As for West Germany — which now provides 42 percent of the budget for the financially pressed WCC — official protests are muted, but one top churchman reports 'bitter reaction in our churches.'… In the U.S., important elements in such WCC member groups as the United Methodist Church, the United Church of Christ and the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese are upset.

Now, I would expect such behaviour from people like Episcopalians. However, when one looks at the member churches of the WCC on their website, one finds that more groups than just liberal Protestants are involved. Even groups that we would generally consider reputable. I have put the names of such groups in bold font.

Christian World Communions
International organizations of churches of the same tradition or confession have been formed since the middle of the 19th century. Since 1957 there have been annual informal gatherings of the secretaries of such organizations; and it is from among the bodies represented at these meetings that this list is taken, although not all them would define themselves as “Christian World Communions”. What a number of churches!

I am proud to say The First Congregational Methodist Church has absolutely NOTHING to do with the WCC.
WP

#8

There’s very little to connect this thread to terrorism.

#9

#10

I just wanted to point out that the list you provide is not a list of member groups, but just a page with links to websites of various groups, including non-members who have interacted with the WCC.

Here is the list of actual members. The Catholic Church is not an actual member, for example, but has had some discussions with them.

wcc-coe.org/wcc/who/mch-e.html

#11

I think that the Catholic Church sends observers to WCC meetings. Also, it is disturbing to note that most of the Orthodox groups and the Assyrians are members.

#12

What’s disturbing is you’ve not really made a link between them and terrorism

#13

Well, as I said several posts back, quoting from the initial post:

“* Donating $85,000 to the Patriotic Front of Zimbabwe (ZANU) in 1978, months after the group shot down an airliner, killing 38 of the 56 passengers on board. Members are reported to have killed 10 survivors (this was denied by the Front)”

So, the WCC donated $85,000 to the terrorist organisation ZANU. ZANU was responsible for killing many innocent people, in addition to the 38 on the shot down airliner. How have I failed to establish a link between the WCC and terrorism?

#14

You don’t understand Sobieski. When people label Christian churches/organisations as “terrorists”, any decent Christian should challenge such allegations on the basis that terrorist attacks and actions are clearly NOT reflective of Jesus’ teachings and words. If you can demonstrate that terrorism is based on real Christian doctrine and teachings, then you will have a point.

#15

I recognise you said it. However it took me a while to link this evidence with the site in wikipedia - where it’s buried towards the bottom of the page.

Note that they gave the money in 1978. Are they still funding terrorism?
Your wiki site says that this was a controversey just of the 1970s.

Are the current members those who were members in 1978?
For, note one of your sites says this atop of its page
"Below is an alphabetical listing of church and ecumenical organizations web sites or e-mail dialogues including official sites of WCC member churches and associate member churches (indicated by an *)"

For one of the groups is the The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops SO are you saying that Catholics in America funded terrorism? Or worse, at the very heart of the Catholic Church, for the vatican is also linked. For that site is simply a link site of churches.

You should have gone through it more carefully.

And as you rely on wiki, it says
While not a member of the WCC, the Roman Catholic Church is a member of some other ecumenical bodies at regional and national levels, for example, the National Council of Churches in Australia and the National Council of Christian Churches in Brazil (CONIC).

So although they may have funded groups which took part in acts of terror, as a means of liberating themselves BACK IN THE 1970s You’ve confused your own issue by setting up one site that includes the Catholic church, even though they’re not a member of the WCC - so you’re attempting to attack - through that reference, your own church!

#16

The World Council of Churches has not had a great reputation for some time - their main achievement of note was summoning up the courage to deny the JWs admission!
So I find any comments aboutn this organisation irrelevant to myself.

#17

It doesn’t appear that they are still funding terrorism, but they were in the 1970’s.

Perhaps new members have joined since 1978; I don’t know.

I’m not saying that the Catholic Church directly funded terrorism. (we’re not talking about the IRA here;) ) However, it seems that the Catholic Church is an “associate member” of the WCC, a group which has funded terrorism. Does this mean that the Catholic Church funded the terrorism, no. But it does mean that the Catholic Church supports an organisation that has funded terrorism.

I’m attacking the WCC. I also put up the list of groups that are members or that have affiliations with the WCC, to show what denominations in Christianity support the WCC. As to attacking my “own church”. Yes, I am Catholic. But, does that mean that I have to approve of everything the Church is involved with, including the WCC?

#18

I think he has.
Is the fact that the WCC gives dinar to Marxist terrorist groups not enough?
WP

#19

Likewise the General Assn of Regular Baptist Churches have never been a part of the WCC

#20

The RCC or the Byantine Catholic in America have never been WCC members and never will be, they have observer status.
